By Tuesday afternoon, rioters had erected barricades at various locations around the city. From these vantage points rioters ventured out to other parts of the city to loot and to confront the authorities. The building of barricades made the efforts of the police both easier and more difficult. On the one hand, groups of rioters could be found and arrested at or near barricaded streets; on the other hand, rioters staunchly defended their barricades and the fortifications proved difficult for the police to breach.
